Biography

Joe Bogue is a Professor in the Department of Food Business and Development at Cork University Business School, University College Cork. Joe teaches modules at undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education levels on many programmes within Cork University Business School (Food Marketing and Entrepreneurship, BComm/BComm International) and across University College Cork (School of Food and Nutritional Sciences). His teaching includes food entrepreneurship, consumer food choice analysis, strategic food marketing and market-oriented new food product innovation. Professor Bogue is a founder and a Co-Director of the MSc in Food Business and Innovation Programme. He served as an External Examiner at institutions such as the University of Ulster, University of Edinburgh and The University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. 

Joe’s research focuses on market-oriented new product development, strategic food marketing, functional foods, food choice and consumer acceptance in relation to novel products, dairy supply chains and entrepreneurship and has published widely in numerous international journals, books and reports. Joe has conducted funded research on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the Higher Education Authority (HEA), Enterprise Ireland (EI) and the European Union (EU). He was Co-PI on a successful Horizon 2020 grant worth €1.8 million on European Entrepreneurship. Joe is a co-founder of the Dairy Evolution Next (DEX) Network, a collaborative platform that facilitates the exchange of knowledge and expertise across the UK and Ireland. This was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Irish Research Council (IRC). Joe has supervised 13 PhD students to completion, 5 post-docs and over 50 research master students.  

Prior to joining UCC, Prof. Bogue worked in strategic marketing and management in the food sector. Joe graduated from The University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom with a PhD on market-oriented NPD. His other postgraduate qualifications include an MSc in Food Science and Technology (Food Marketing and Entrepreneurship, UCC) and an MA in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (Entrepreneurship Education, UCC). He received his BSc in Science from UCC.  

Prof. Bogue has taken a leadership role in embedding various entrepreneurship activities throughout Cork University Business School and University College Cork. He is a Project Lead on two projects funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) on integrating SDGs-driven entrepreneurship culture across Ireland, and works with other Irish HEIs: Munster Technological University (MTU), Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Dublin City University (DCU), South-East Technological university (SETU) and Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT). He has also been leading HEA UCC Entrepreneurship Summer Schools for secondary level students since 2017 with over €80,000.00 in funding. Joe is the UCC co-lead for Student Inc. Student Entrepreneurship Accelerator Programme since 2019, and the latest edition of this HEA funded Programme includes a collaborative network of nine Irish HEIs committed to student entrepreneurship. Joe is a former Head of the Department of Food Business and Development (2028-2021) and Chair of the UCC Entrepreneurship Implementation Group (EIG). He is a Programme Co-Director for the MSc Food Business and Innovation. Joe is a member of the Association for Consumer Research (ACR), Product Development and Management Association (PDMA), Marketing Institute of Ireland (MII) and the Irish Academy of Management (IAM). He is a member of the Product Development and Management Association UK and Ireland. He is also the UCC representative for INTRE (Ireland’s Network of Teachers and Researchers in Entrepreneurship). He was awarded peer-reviewed certification as a New Product Professional of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA), USA in 2006, 2010 and 2012. He is on the Editorial Board of the British Food Journal and serves as a reviewer for numerous international journals and for many research funding agencies (ESRC and European Science Foundation). Prof. Bogue collaborates with many international networks in entrepreneurship and food business and has established partnerships with many including St. Joseph’s University (Philadelphia), University of Otago (New Zealand), Ulster University Business School (Northern Ireland), University of Siena (Italy), University of Torino (Italy), University of the West of Scotland (Scotland), University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain).
